International Day of Charity
~ An informative blog unveiling the Heartfelt Significance of International Day of Charity, presented by Hemangini Swaminathan.
The United Nations observes the International Day of Charity on the 5th of September annually. According to the UN, the intention of celebrating this day is to ‘Sensitize and mobilize people, NGOs, and stakeholders all around the world to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities.’ A simple agenda with a profound impact.
WHY WE CELEBRATE ?
On this day we raise awareness of the importance of charity and provide a platform for all humanitarian organizations around the world. A day where we honor and applaud those who have contributed their lives towards the well-being of others.
The reason we celebrate this day on the 5th of September is to commemorate the death anniversary of the heroic and noble Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa’s birth name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu and was born in 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia. She is sought out to be one of the most beloved and revered figures in the history of humanitarian work and an iconic symbol of selfless compassion and love. Her diligent nature to help the poor and sick in India was inspiring and moving to say the least. She devoted herself to helping the destitute and also orchestrated the expansion of the Missionaries of Charity all over India and the world. Mother Teresa’s commitment to her people in the harshest of times truly inspires us to be more empathetic in our day to day lives, because even the smallest act of kindness can change lives.
WHY DO WE NEED CHARITY?
Charity, in simple words, is the action of supporting and helping people who are in dire need. It’s about being kind and understanding to those who are under-privileged.
Charity is a great way for societies to come together, it helps us put aside our differences and focus on uplifting people affected by all kinds of humanitarian crises. We become more inclusive and stable as a community and furthermore strengthen the intuition of social responsibility amongst all.
Tackling problems arising due to social and economic injustices can easily be handled through simple measures such as redistributing resources to people who are at a disadvantage. It has the power to positively change lives whether it be through nourishment of an empty stomach or through the donation of a simple light bulb to illuminate a home. Charity is truly a wonderful act of human kindness, the way it warms the soul that gives and nourishes the soul that receives a unique and beautiful feeling someone can experience. It is the gift that keeps on giving.
People experiencing difficult situations can feel hopeful and optimistic when they perform charitable deeds. It serves as a reminder that there is good in the world and that people struggle together.
HOW CAN I HELP?
Therefore as an individual, we must also take part and contribute our fair share of help to those in need. There are many ways you can impact lives, one can make charitable donations to NGOs nearby you, you can also volunteer your time and energy to these organizations and encourage others to do so too.
Let’s hope one day through the powerful act of charity we can eradicate poverty in all its forms and dimensions.
